ADOPTION V. CONSERVATORSHIP
Are you raising your grandchildren or other relatives? At some point, you will probably need more than a power of attorney to obtain insurance, enroll them in school, obtain medical help in a crisis, or get a passport. We can help. You may be able to obtain legal custody without an adoption. Legal custody (also called “managing conservatorship”) will give you the right to make medical, educational, and other decisions without terminating the parents’ rights. Conservatorship is labeled “permanent” but can be changed at a later time. If the parents are not willing to relinquish their parental rights or termination of their rights will be impossible or too costly, conservatorship may be an option.
